The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is witnessing a remarkable increase in the rates of traffic accidents, which have claimed hundreds of lives, in addition to the heavy losses of the national economy and the social and health effects resulting from traffic accidents.

Hence the idea of establishing the Saudi Traffic Safety Society in 2010 AD, to represent a qualitative addition in the field of traffic safety, and to integrate with the governmental efforts made by our rational and effective governments, as well as the civil and community sectors and those with experience in the field of traffic safety, to contribute to spreading the culture of traffic safety, And to create a safe environment in our society, and to alleviate this suffering, which has become an issue for everyone, without exception.

The Traffic Safety Committee in the Eastern Region, represented by the Traffic Safety Program at Saudi Aramco, initiated contact with the College of Architecture and Planning at Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University to propose the establishment of a scientific society under the university’s umbrella, given the various specializations it contains related to traffic safety, such as the College of Architecture and Planning, the College of Engineering, the College of Education and Colleges The proposal was presented to the relevant councils of the college and university, and the university council was approved in its second session on 12/24/1431 corresponding to 11/30/2010 AD to establish a scientific society at the university bearing the name "Saudi Traffic Safety Society" at the College of Architecture and Planning, and the approval of His Excellency was issued The Minister of Higher Education approved the decision according to the written telegram No. 9350 dated 27-1-1432, for the association to practice its activities in community service and to present a set of initiatives of public benefit, to develop theoretical and applied knowledge, and to provide scientific and applied advice and studies to the public and private sectors in the field of traffic safety. According to the rules regulating scientific societies in Saudi universities.

The Saudi Traffic Safety Association seeks to achieve the following goals:

  • Development of scientific thought in the field of traffic safety and work to develop and revitalize it.
  • Achieving scientific communication between those interested in traffic safety.
  • Providing scientific advice in the field of traffic safety to all governmental and private agencies.
  • Developing the scientific and professional performance of those involved in traffic and traffic safety by holding courses and conferences.
  • Facilitating the exchange of scientific production and scientific ideas between agencies and institutions concerned with traffic and traffic safety inside and outside the Kingdom.

The association carries out enormous tasks and plays large and multiple roles in its field of work, as follows:

  • Developing regulations, laws and procedures related to traffic safety and their applications with the concerned authorities
  • Encouraging the conduct of scientific research and advice related to traffic safety and its application in cooperation with the concerned authorities.
  • Writing and translating scientific books in the field of traffic safety and other related fields.
  • Conducting scientific studies to develop practical aspects of traffic safety aspects.
  • Issuing scientific studies, bulletins and periodicals related to traffic safety.
  • Participation in local and international exhibitions.
  • Encouraging all social strata to provide voluntary services to improve traffic safety.
  • Organizing scientific trips for its members and holding scientific competitions in the field of traffic safety.
  • Holding scientific competitions, courses and conferences.

The association depends on its own resources, which are:

  • The outcome of the annual subscriptions of members.
  • The outcome of sold publications and periodicals, and the services it provides within the limits of its objectives.
  • Revenue from its courses and programs.
  • Gifts, donations and grants offered by the university, bodies or individuals.
  • The number of active members of the association reaches 248 members concerned with traffic safety.
  • Preparing a curriculum for the bachelor's course in the field of transportation and traffic engineering at the College of Engineering at Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University and it was approved by the Supreme Education Council and several batches were graduated so far, and the first batch was in the 2016-2017 academic year.
  • Adopting the idea of establishing the Saudi Aramco Traffic Safety Chair to diagnose and propose improvements to the level of traffic safety and start work in mid-2014.
  • An international traffic safety forum and exhibition has been organized every two years since 2011 with the participation of experts from inside and outside the Kingdom, and it witnesses a large presence from all regions of the Kingdom. Five forums have been organized so far.
  • Participation in the elaboration, management and implementation of the "Eastern Province Ideal Driver Award" competition, which has been held annually since 2014.
  • Holding several refresher courses for traffic safety engineers in the secretariats, the General Traffic Department, the Ministry of Transport in the Eastern Region and the Education Department.
  • Adopting a "Training of Trainers" program in the field of traffic safety in cooperation with the National Council Safety and Dallah Al Baraka Company, with the aim of qualifying the largest number of trainers in traffic safety in the Kingdom.
  • Establishing student clubs for traffic safety in several universities and colleges across the Kingdom. 12 clubs have been established.
  • Organizing and setting up a forum for traffic safety clubs, the first edition of which was held in 2019 AD at Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University in Dammam.
  • The "Traffic Safety Caravan" program was established in cooperation with the Traffic Safety Committee and the Ministry of Education, in which thousands of male and female students and university employees participated in the Kingdom.
  • Organizing awareness campaigns for traffic safety in many schools in the Eastern Region for boys and girls.
  • Participating in managing and implementing the Gulf Traffic Week in the Eastern Province to raise awareness of traffic safety.
  • Organizing meetings to host officials to exchange experiences and expertise (example: hosting the President of the Public Transport Authority), and organizing awareness campaigns for companies (example: SASREF Traffic Safety Campaign).
  • Opening a branch of the association in the western region in Jeddah.
  • Printing and publishing awareness materials on traffic safety in several languages (Arabic, English, Urdu), and distributing them on several occasions.
  • Issuing the periodical "Safety" magazine specialized in traffic safety. Two issues have been issued so far.
  • Signing cooperation agreements with many governmental and private agencies.
  • 4 scientific books in the field of traffic safety have been published and printed, and more than 25 films have been produced that include various elements of traffic safety.
